Questions, answered
Is it really free?
Some walks are free. The rest are made by local guides and cost £0.99 to £4.99 — the guide earns from every one sold.
Do I need internet while walking?
Yes, for now. The stories stream as you reach each stop, so keep mobile data on. GPS itself works without a signal, and saving walks to listen offline is the next thing we are building.
Which cities can I walk in?
Wherever someone has recorded a walk — London first, and more as local guides publish theirs. Free Walk works anywhere: it follows you around and plays whatever independent stops it finds nearby.
Will it drain my battery?
A walk runs with the screen off and the phone in your pocket, which is the point, but it does keep GPS and audio going. Budget for roughly what a podcast and a map app would cost you together.
Can I make my own walk?
Yes. Add stops on the map, record the audio in the app and publish. We read every route before it goes live, and once it is out there you earn from the people who walk it.
